Monday, September 15th: Art Norris reads from "Succession", his new collection of linked stories set through the season of a hay harvest, against the backdrop of the suburbanization of an agricultural district in the foothills of Alberta. Reading will take place at the NEW Auburn Saloon, located on Centre St. and 9th Avenue.

The University of Calgary Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme celebrates a decade of writing on Friday, September 19, 2003 with a daylong celebration of reading and writing at the Rozsa Centre. 12 writers out of the 35 writers who have participated in the Markin-Flanagan programme over the last decade join in the celebration.
Festival Events
Three daytime writing panels take place between 10
am and 3:30 pm:
10 am to 11 pmWriting across genres
Dionne Brand, Richard Harrison, Roberta Rees and Richard Sanger discuss the
fine art of genre-hopping and other literary promiscuities.
1 pm to 2 pm The language of fiction / the language of fact
Louis de Bernières, Suzette Mayr, Rosemary Nixon and Peter Oliva navigate
the shifting landscapes of imaginary and historical texts and places.
2:30 pm to 3:30 pm The politics of pleasure and the pleasure of politics
Anita Badami, Ven Begamudré, Larissa Lai and Laura Robinson explore
the super-charged space of politics and pleasure in political writing.
Panel discussions are free and open to the public.
Gala reading and reception at 7:30 pm:
Anita Badami, Dionne Brand and Louis de Bernières read from their
latest books. A free reception follows the reading, where writerswill be on
hand for book-signings.
The three writers have taken part in the Markin-Flanagan programme asdistinguished visiting writers in the past and are returning to Calgaryespecially for the gala celebration.
Badami reads from The Heros Walk and her forthcoming book, Can You Hear the Nightbird Call?, a novel that explores the complex roots of terrorism. Brand reads from her latest poetry collection, thirsty, a sensual biography on the emerging city of Toronto and its troubled emotional and historical crossroads; and de Bernières reads from his forthcoming novel, Birds Without Wings, a novel he began during his residency in Calgary.
A free reception follows the reading. Writers will be on hand forbook-signings.
Festival events are free and open to the public.

Romeo Dallaire discusses his first hand account of the Rwandan genocide of
1993 in his new book "Shake Hands With the Devil". Admission is
$5 and tickets are available from Pages. Based on last year's ticket sales
